Anyone traveling to South Africa shouldn’t miss a visit to the “Mother City,” Cape Town, on the Atlantic coast in the Western Cape. With its wonderful blend of African, European, and Malay influences, in a city, backed by the iconic Table Mountain, this city is a must-visit option on your itinerary.
While the city has many restaurants and bars to choose from, it also has endless shopping, fascinating history, gorgeous beaches, culture and art. In fact, it is difficult to do everything you want to in just one visit to Cape Town. The following are three of the must-see things to do in Cape Town, South Africa.
2. Cable car up Table Mountain in Cape Town

As mentioned above, Cape Town is backed by Table Mountain, which is an iconic landmark that always grabs the eye, wherever you are in the city. However, besides gazing at it in wonder, visitors often take a hike up to the top of the mountain. For those without the energy for a hike, a cable car is just waiting to take you to the summit.
Once at the top of Table Mountain, the views are amazing, revealing the city below and across the Atlantic Ocean. There it is possible to see Robben Island, the notorious prison of former South African president, Nelson Mandela. There is also a short walk to enjoy while up there and you might even spot the dassies (rock hyrax) that live up there.
While the mountain is incredible to visit, it can often be covered by clouds, dubbed locally as the “tablecloth.” This can drop very quickly and ruin your view completely. Keep an eye on the sky before planning your visit.
3. Stroll in Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden

Another must-visit is the gorgeous Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden which slopes down from Table Mountain towards Cape Town’s southern suburbs. Stroll on the grass between the colorful garden beds and make sure to view the protea garden. These gorgeous plants are South Africa’s national flower.

Bird watchers should stroll on the Tree Canopy Walkway which gives an elevated view over the garden. Besides being the perfect spot to relax and stroll, fun events are regularly held here, including Cape Town’s Summer Sunset concert series and craft markets.
3. Visit the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town

The V&A Waterfront is one of Cape Town’s most popular locations, which sees 24 million visits each year. Branching out from the old working harbor, the V&A is backed by the iconic Table Mountain one way, and the Atlantic Ocean in the other. While there, shop at the shopping malls, dine at the many restaurants, or raise a glass at a local bar.
Alternatively, the waterfront offers many yacht and catamaran cruises to enjoy out in Table Bay. On top of this, visitors should pop into the Two Oceans Aquarium with its amazing displays of native marine life.
